Chatsworth Park

Chatsworth House and Park is one of Britain's most stunning Historic Houses and landscapes. It contains a large number of ancient oaks, of both native species, including some clearly of a great age. We are delighted to partner with Chatsworth, and in 2022 we returned some saplings to start planting up new oak groves in the ancient Deer Park.

Sublime Oak

Species: Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak)

Estimated Age in 2025: 959 years

Form: Natural Pollard - this marvellous tree has an exquisite location high above a meandering brook in a quiet part of the Deer Park.

Girth at 1.5m: 9.42m (measured in 2018)

Estimated Year of Birth: 1066

Reigning Monarch at the time: William the Conqueror

Story: this is what some people call (a bit meanly) a traffic cone shape, which one can see in the photos. It is really a very old tree with a low centre of gravity, and the oaklings grow well.

Sizes available (and approximate prices):

30-80cm, 2L: £41 to £71 (3 available)

75-175cm, 7L: £141 to £201 (6 available)

125-200cm, 12L: £171 (1 available)

150-250cm, 15L: £201 to £321 (10 available)

200-275cm, 20L: £221 to £271 (3 available)

'One or Two' Oak

Species: Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak)

Estimated Age: either around 500+ years old or 1,000+ years old, depending on whether it's one or two trees.

Form: Maiden(s)

Girth at 1.5m: individual stems are both around 6.9m (measured in 2019), but the overall girth if it's one tree was measured in 2022 as 11.78m at 1.5m above ground (standard measuring practice) and 12.97m at 1.3m above ground. If it proves to be one tree, then this would make it one of the largest and oldest oaks in Britain.

Estimated Year of Birth: 1525 or 1025!

Reigning Monarch at the time: Henry VIII or King Cnut the Great.

Story: this Being is a bit of a mystery as it really could be a single tree where the leading shoot was grazed out and perhaps there was some pollarding going on, or it is two individual trees which have fused at the base. Perhaps a genetic study is required to find the answer. It does have the overall look and feel of a single tree.

125-175cm, 7L: £181 to £201 (only 1 available)
